Fornuizen

Fornuizen are kitchen appliances used for cooking and food preparation. They typically combine a hob with an oven and can be freestanding or built into cabinetry. In contemporary kitchens the term covers gas, electric (coil, radiant/ceramic, or induction) cooktops, along with various oven configurations such as conventional, convection, or combination units.

There are several main types and configurations. Gas cookers heat by burning gas on burners, offering immediate control and high power but requiring good ventilation. Electric coil cooktops use resistive coils, while radiant and ceramic surfaces spread heat across flat panels beneath a smooth surface. Induction cooktops heat pots and pans through magnetic coupling, offering rapid response and high efficiency but requiring compatible cookware. Ovens can be traditional or fan-forced (convection), and many models include features like multiple cooking modes, timers, and self-cleaning cycles. Combination units may include a separate wall oven or a range cooker that integrates hob and oven in a single tall appliance.

Energy efficiency and safety are important considerations. Induction and modern electric ovens typically have better energy efficiency and precise control compared with traditional gas or coil systems. Appliances sold in Europe and Norway are subject to safety standards and energy labeling, with compliance indicated by marks such as CE and energy efficiency ratings. Safety features may include automatic shut-off, child locks, flame-failure protection, and proper ventilation requirements for gas-powered units.

Historically, stoves evolved from coal and wood-fired designs to gas and electric models in the 20th century, with induction becoming common in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Today, fornuizen are central to domestic cooking and vary widely in design to suit different kitchens and cooking needs.
