Formationwasser
Formationwasser, or formation water, is the water that has been trapped in the pore spaces of rocks and sediments within a geological formation since deposition and subsequent diagenesis. It is distinct from meteoric groundwater and from waters that later recharge aquifers. In many sedimentary basins, formation water remains at depth for geological timescales and can be chemically evolved through water–rock interactions.
Formation water originates from the fluids present during sediment deposition, often with marine or connate components.
Formation water is widespread in sedimentary rocks and plays a central role in petroleum geology and hydrogeology.
Formation water is sampled during well testing and core analysis. Analyses typically include salinity and major
