The properties of formaldehyde resins vary depending on the co-reactant used with formaldehyde. Urea-formaldehyde resins are known for their good electrical insulation properties, clarity, and ability to be molded into various shapes. They are often used in adhesives for wood products like particleboard and plywood, as well as in laminates and coatings. Melamine-formaldehyde resins, derived from melamine and formaldehyde, are harder, more heat-resistant, and more scratch-resistant than urea-formaldehyde resins. They find applications in decorative laminates for countertops and furniture, dinnerware, and electrical components.

Phenolic resins, formed from phenol and formaldehyde, are among the oldest synthetic polymers. They are characterized by their excellent thermal stability, chemical resistance, and mechanical strength. Applications include molded parts for automotive and aerospace industries, electrical insulation, coatings, and adhesives. The curing process of these resins involves cross-linking, which creates a three-dimensional network structure. While versatile, formaldehyde resins are also subject to regulations due to the potential release of formaldehyde, a known irritant and carcinogen, especially during the curing process or from finished products over time.
