Forkings

Forkings refers to the plural of forking, the phenomenon in which a project, protocol, or system splits into two or more branches that evolve independently. Forkings are common in decentralized or collaborative environments where multiple stakeholders can influence the direction of development. The term can apply across different domains, including software, governance of protocols, and runtime systems.

In software development, a repository fork creates an independent codebase derived from an original project. This allows contributors to experiment, adopt different licensing, or pursue alternative architectures without altering the original project. Forks can be used to preserve legacy versions, test radical changes, or incubate features that may or may not be reintegrated. In operating systems and computing, forking describes the creation of a new process by duplicating the state of an existing one; this is conceptually related but serves a runtime mechanism rather than a project split. In blockchain and distributed ledgers, forks occur when consensus rules change or when participants disagree on the current state; hard forks introduce incompatible changes, while soft forks maintain backward compatibility.
