The word combines forhold (relationship, situation) and orientert (oriented). In management and organizational psychology, forholdsorientert ledelse refers to leaders who emphasize communication, trust, participation, and emotional support to create a positive group climate and psychological safety. This is often contrasted with oppgaveorientert ledelse, which prioritizes goals, structure, and task execution.

In education, counseling, and family contexts, a forholdsorientert approach focuses on the quality of interactions, empathy, listening, and conflict resolution. In teams, it aims to strengthen cohesion, mutual respect, and collaboration, potentially enhancing motivation and retention.
