Fordelingsnettet

Fordelingsnettet is the portion of the electrical grid that distributes electricity from the high-voltage transmission network to end users. In Norway, it is operated and maintained by distribution system operators (DSOs), commonly referred to as nettselskaper. The network comprises medium and low voltage cables, substations and related equipment that connect households, businesses and public institutions to the grid. The transmission system operator handles the high-voltage network, while Fordelingsnettet delivers power from the sub-transmission points to final consumers.

DSOs are responsible for planning, expansion, maintenance, fault clearance and outage restoration within their supply area. They also handle metering data, voltage regulation and the connection of new customers. The use of the distribution network is regulated by the national regulator, NVE, which determines tariffs and terms of access. Tariffs typically include a fixed charge per connection and a variable charge based on consumption or contracted capacity, with differences among regions and operators.

In recent years, Fordelingsnettet faces challenges from aging infrastructure, increasing distributed energy production and electrification of transport and heating, as well as the need for improved reliability and cyber-physical security. Grid operators are investing in modernization, smart metering and enhanced grid management to accommodate fluctuating generation and demand.

The concept is used in Norway and other countries under names such as distribution network or distribution grid and is distinct from the high-voltage transmission network.
