Folkeskoler

Folkeskoler refer to the Danish public schools that provide compulsory education in Denmark. They cover primary and lower secondary schooling and are funded and organised by municipalities. Education is compulsory from about age 6 to 16, typically through the years 0–9, with a voluntary 10th grade in many places. The term highlights the public nature of the system, in contrast to private schools.

The national government sets the framework for folkeskolen through curriculum guidelines, while municipalities run the individual schools and employ teachers and staff. The system emphasises inclusive education, aiming to support students with various needs through special undervisning and support services. Schools are often arranged to foster social development alongside academic learning, with a focus on developing skills for everyday life and participation in society.

The curriculum generally includes Danish, mathematics, and English as a first foreign language, along with science subjects (such as biology and physics/chemistry), social studies, and physical education. Arts and crafts, music, and information technology are commonly taught, and many schools offer additional languages, religion or ethics, and other electives. Teaching methods often combine classroom instruction with project work and collaborative learning.

Assessment in folkeskolen combines ongoing evaluation with periodic examinations or final assessments at certain stages. After completing the compulsory years, students may pursue upper secondary education, such as gymnasium or vocational programs, with guidance from the schools. In recent decades, reforms have aimed to strengthen core competencies, digital literacy, and inclusive practices within the system.
