Foliopainatuksessa, often translated as foil printing or hot foil stamping, is a printing process that applies a metallic or pigmented foil to a substrate using a heated die. This technique is widely used for decorative purposes and to add a premium feel to printed materials. The process involves a die, typically made of metal, which is engraved with the desired design. This die is then heated and pressed onto a sheet of foil, transferring the foil's coating onto the surface of the substrate, such as paper, cardstock, or plastic.

The foil itself consists of several layers, including a carrier film, a release layer, a pigment or metallic layer, and an adhesive layer. The heat and pressure from the die cause the adhesive layer to bond with the substrate, while the release layer allows the carrier film to be peeled away, leaving the decorative layer behind. Common types of foils include metallic foils in gold, silver, copper, and various colors, as well as matte and iridescent finishes. Specialty foils can also incorporate holographic effects, patterns, or textured finishes.
