Foça

Foça is a town and district in İzmir Province, Turkey. It is located on the Aegean coast, approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) north of İzmir city center. The town is divided into two main areas: Eski Foça (Old Foça) and Yeni Foça (New Foça). Eski Foça is the historical heart of the settlement, with a charming old town featuring narrow streets, stone houses, and a picturesque harbor. Yeni Foça, located a few kilometers north, is a more modern development, also with a coastline and amenities.

Historically, Foça is known as the site of ancient Phocaea, one of the Ionian Greek cities. Phocaea was a prominent maritime power and founded numerous colonies around the Mediterranean and Black Seas, including Massalia (modern Marseille) and Alalia (modern Aléria in Corsica). The ancient ruins, though not as extensive as some other nearby sites, can still be visited. The area has a rich history influenced by various civilizations, including the Lydians, Persians, Romans, and Byzantines, before coming under Ottoman rule.

Today, Foça is a popular tourist destination, especially for domestic visitors. Its main attractions include its beaches, clear waters, historical sites, and fresh seafood. The Eski Foça harbor is a focal point for visitors, with many cafes and restaurants lining the waterfront. The town is also known for its Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. The surrounding area offers opportunities for sailing, fishing, and exploring the natural landscape.
