Flöhe

Flöhe are small, wingless insects belonging to the order Siphonaptera. They are external parasites that feed on the blood of mammals and birds. Fleas are known for their strong hind legs, which allow them to jump considerable distances, enabling them to transfer from host to host. Their bodies are laterally compressed, which helps them move easily through the fur or feathers of their hosts.

The flea life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult fleas lay eggs, typically on the host animal, which then fall off into the environment. The larvae hatch from these eggs and feed on organic debris, including adult flea feces (flea dirt). Once mature, the larvae spin cocoons and enter the pupal stage. The adult flea emerges from the pupal case when it detects the presence of a potential host, often through vibrations or body heat.

Fleas can be a nuisance to pets and humans, causing itchy bites that can lead to scratching and potential secondary infections. Some species of fleas are also vectors for diseases, such as plague and typhus. Common fleas include the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis), the dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis), and the human flea (Pulex irritans). Control of flea infestations often involves treating the affected animal with insecticides and thoroughly cleaning the environment to eliminate eggs, larvae, and pupae.
