Flödesbeteendet, often translated as flow behavior or flow characteristic, describes how a substance or material deforms and moves under stress. This concept is central to the field of rheology, which studies the flow of matter. Different materials exhibit distinct flow behaviors, influencing their properties and applications.

Common types of flödesbeteendet include Newtonian fluids, non-Newtonian fluids, and solid-like behavior. Newtonian fluids, such as water or oil, have a viscosity that remains constant regardless of the applied shear stress or rate. Their flow rate is directly proportional to the applied force. Non-Newtonian fluids, on the other hand, show a variable viscosity. Shear-thinning fluids, like ketchup or paint, become less viscous as shear stress increases, making them easier to pour or spread. Shear-thickening fluids, such as cornstarch and water mixtures, become more viscous with increased shear.

Other behaviors include thixotropy, where viscosity decreases over time under constant shear stress, and rheopexy, the opposite, where viscosity increases over time. Materials can also exhibit viscoelasticity, displaying both viscous and elastic properties, meaning they can deform under stress but also return to their original shape to some extent.
