Flyverjakke

Flyverjakke is a short, waist-length jacket originally designed for military pilots. In Norwegian and Danish usage it is commonly translated as bomber jacket or flight jacket. The design emphasizes practicality and mobility, with a zip-front closure, rib-knit cuffs and hem, and multiple pockets. Materials have varied by era and model, including leather for early versions and nylon for later field-issue jackets. Typical colors are olive drab, black, or brown, and many military examples display patches and insignia.

Historically, the flyverjakke emerged in the 1930s and was widely issued by air forces during World War II. Early leather models such as the A-2 and B-3 established the style, while later nylon variants—most notably the MA-1—became standard in the U.S. military and influenced civilian fashion. The jacket remained popular through the mid- to late 20th century as a versatile outerwear piece worn by civilians and subcultures.

Today the term remains common in Scandinavian languages to refer to the style regardless of material. Modern versions range from vintage-style leather jackets to lightweight nylon or satin forms, often with removable linings or fur collars. The silhouette remains a short, athletic-cut jacket with practical pockets, suitable for casual wear and contemporary fashion.
