Fluoriders

Fluoriders are a speculative class of small, amphibious organisms that have been described in the context of theoretical biology modeling. They are purported to inhabit shallow, alkaline pools where high concentrations of fluoride ions are present. Morphologically, fluoriders are expected to possess translucent skin that fluoresces under ultraviolet light, a feature that is theorized to provide camouflage against predators in low‑light environments. Their bodies are described as laterally flattened with short, webbed limbs, enabling efficient swimming and quick surface movement on the water's edge. Eyes are positioned laterally on the head, offering a wide field of view which has been hypothesized to be advantageous for spotting both aquatic and terrestrial threats.

The diet of fluoriders is presumed to consist of microscopic algae and detritus, which they consume using a specialized jaw apparatus that can filter fine particles from the water column. Reproduction is thought to occur through external fertilization, with eggs released in gelatinous strings that adhere to submerged vegetation. Researchers have looked for evidence of fluorider populations in controlled aquaria with elevated fluoride levels, but no conclusive studies have yet confirmed their existence.

The term fluorider first appeared in a speculative discussion on how organisms might adapt to extreme ionic environments. It is often cited in academic literature as an example of how minute changes in ecological conditions can drive evolutionary innovation, though its status remains hypothetical and has yet to be substantiated by empirical data.
