In ophthalmology, fluorescein angiography is a common application. A dye solution is injected into a vein, and as it circulates through the blood vessels of the retina, it is illuminated with blue light. The fluorescence allows doctors to observe the blood flow and identify abnormalities such as leakage or blockages in the retinal vasculature, aiding in the diagnosis and management of conditions like diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration.

Beyond ophthalmology, fluorescein staining is employed in microbiology for staining bacteria and other microorganisms, in histology for examining tissue samples, and in research to track the movement of substances or cells. Its bright emission and relatively low toxicity make it a versatile tool for a wide range of biological and medical imaging applications.
