Fluon

Fluon is a brand name used for fluoropolymer products, especially those based on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), including coatings, resins, films, and dispersions. The Fluon designation has been employed by different manufacturers in various regions for a range of fluoropolymer materials and applications, from consumer coatings to industrial linings.

The brand originated with Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in the United Kingdom, where PTFE-based fluoropolymers were developed and marketed under the Fluon name in the mid-20th century. Over time, the rights or licenses to the Fluon brand have been transferred or shared among manufacturers, leading to continued use in different markets for fluoropolymer products.

Fluon products are valued for high chemical resistance, high temperature stability, low friction, non-stick properties, and electrical insulation. They can be formulated as molded resins, coatings, powders, or dispersions and are used in a variety of applications, including non-stick coatings for cookware, protective linings for chemical processing equipment, piping and tanks, gaskets and seals, bearings, and laboratory ware. PTFE and related fluoropolymers also see use in electrical insulation and heat-shielding components.

Safety and environmental considerations accompany Fluon materials. PTFE-based products are generally inert at normal operating temperatures, but decomposition can occur at excessive temperatures, potentially releasing fumes. Fluorinated compounds have faced regulatory scrutiny due to persistence and environmental concerns, prompting reforms to reduce certain perfluorinated substances and historically used carriers such as PFOA. Users should follow manufacturer guidance, particularly for food-contact applications and high-temperature use.
