Flugbenzin

Flugbenzin is the German word for aviation gasoline, commonly known as avgas. It is a high-octane fuel specifically designed for use in piston-engine aircraft. Unlike automotive gasoline, flugbenzin contains a significant amount of tetraethyllead (TEL) as an anti-knock agent. This additive increases the octane rating, preventing engine knocking or detonation, which is critical for the reliable operation of high-compression piston aircraft engines.

The composition of flugbenzin varies, but it is typically a blend of hydrocarbons with a high octane rating, often in the range of 100 to 130. This rating is based on the Aviation Research Gasoline (ARG) scale, which is different from the octane rating used for automotive fuels. The presence of lead in flugbenzin has environmental and health concerns, leading to ongoing research and development into lead-free alternatives.

While jet fuel powers most modern commercial and military aircraft with turbine engines, flugbenzin remains essential for a significant portion of the general aviation fleet, including many training aircraft, small private planes, and some older or specialized aircraft. Its specific properties are tailored to the demands of these engines, which operate differently from automotive internal combustion engines. The supply and use of flugbenzin are subject to regulations in different countries.
