Flikker

Flikker is a Dutch-language insult used to demean gay men. It is widely regarded as one of the most offensive terms targeting sexual orientation in the Netherlands and Flanders (Belgium). In everyday speech, the word is employed as a pejorative label to express contempt, ridicule, or rejection of a person on the basis of their sexual orientation.

Etymology and history of the term are uncertain. It has been documented in Dutch-language sources since at least the mid-20th century, but there is no consensus about its precise origins. As a slur, it functions by linking a person to homosexuality in a dehumanizing and stigmatizing way.

Usage and social context vary, but the term is generally condemned in contemporary discourse. Anti-homophobia campaigns, educational institutions, media organizations, and many employers discourage its use, and in many jurisdictions it can be considered harassment or hate speech when directed at an individual or group. While some reclaimed or ironic uses of pejoratives exist for certain terms, “flikker” is not broadly recognized as reclaimed within mainstream LGBTQ+ communities and is primarily treated as a derogatory expression.

In modern Dutch-speaking societies, the term is typically catalogued among examples of homophobic language to be avoided in favor of respectful discourse. Public awareness efforts emphasize reducing slurs and promoting inclusive communication, especially in schools, workplaces, and media.
