Flekso

Flekso is the local term for flexographic printing, widely used in Indonesia and neighboring markets. The term covers the printing process, the equipment, and the production activities that use flexible relief plates.

Process and materials: Flexographic presses use flexible photopolymer or rubber plates mounted on rotating cylinders. Ink is applied by rollers and transferred to substrates such as paper, plastic film, foil, or laminated materials. Inks include water-based, solvent-based, and UV-curable formulations. The process is known for fast drying and suitability for long runs.

Applications: Primarily used for packaging, labels, tapes, wrappers, and other consumer goods where continuous web printing is required. Common substrates include corrugated board, shrink sleeves, and flexible packaging films.

Advantages and limitations: High production speed and lower cost per unit for large volumes, broad substrate compatibility, good color blocking for solids. Limitations include relatively lower resolution compared to some other printing methods, color matching challenges, and sensitivity to substrate surface energy and print-through. Plate and cylinder technology has advanced with improved print quality and optical registration.

Industry context: In Indonesia, flekso remains a dominant method for packaging and labeling due to its efficiency and adaptability to thin films and laminates. Training and service networks support rapid maintenance of flekso lines.
