Flehite

Flehite is a term used in veterinary medicine to describe inflammation of a vein. It is often associated with the formation of a blood clot within the affected vein, a condition known as thrombophlebitis. Flehite can occur in various animals, including dogs, cats, and horses.

The causes of flehite are diverse and can include direct trauma to the vein, such as from repeated venipuncture or the administration of irritating medications. Bacterial infections introduced into the vein can also lead to inflammation. In some cases, flehite can be a complication of underlying systemic diseases or conditions that affect blood clotting.

Clinical signs of flehite may include pain, swelling, redness, and warmth along the course of the vein. A palpable cord-like structure may be felt where the vein is inflamed. If a blood clot is present, the affected limb or area may become edematous. Fever can also be a symptom, especially if infection is involved.

Diagnosis of flehite typically involves a physical examination and a review of the animal's history. Diagnostic imaging, such as ultrasonography, can be helpful in visualizing the vein and identifying any thrombus formation. Blood tests may be performed to assess for infection or underlying systemic illness.

Treatment for flehite focuses on reducing inflammation, managing pain, and addressing the underlying cause. This may include rest, anti-inflammatory medications, pain relievers, and antibiotics if an infection is suspected. In cases of significant clotting, anticoagulants may be considered. Surgical intervention is rarely required but might be necessary in severe or complicated cases.
