A five-year-old is a child who has reached the age of five. The term five-year-old is sometimes written as fiveyearold. In many education systems, five-year-olds attend kindergarten or reception and may begin primary school later in the year.

Development at this age includes motor, language, and social growth. Motor skills improve; many five-year-olds can hop on one foot, ride a bike with training wheels, and draw simple shapes. Health and safety considerations include balanced nutrition, dental care, vaccines, and regular checkups, as well as supervision, safe play environments, bike safety gear, and awareness of household hazards.

Milestones vary widely by individual and culture. Five-year-olds progress at different paces, and milestone ranges are used in early childhood research to assess readiness for formal schooling.
