Fingertipmounted

Fingertip-mounted is a term used to describe devices or components that are attached to the fingertip to augment manipulation, sensing, or data capture. As a category, fingertip-mounted devices are typically integrated into gloves, rings, or direct skin-adhered attachments and may include passive sensors, active actuators, or a combination of both.

Common technologies include tactile sensor arrays built from capacitive or piezoresistive materials, force-sensing resistors, and optical sensors; micro cameras for close-range imaging; and miniature actuators such as vibrotactile motors or electrostatic haptic elements. Power is usually supplied by compact batteries or energy harvesting, and data is transmitted via wireless links or wired connections to a nearby controller or computer. Size, weight, and safe skin contact are key design constraints.

There are several applications: in robotics, fingertip-mounted devices facilitate precise teleoperation and dexterous manipulation; in prosthetics and assistive devices they provide sensory feedback or control interfaces; in medical and surgical contexts they can support minimally invasive tools; in virtual reality and augmented reality they enable rich haptic and tactile experiences; and in industrial settings they aid inspection and micro-assembly.

Advantages include enhanced dexterity, high-resolution sensing at the fingertip, and compact form factors that leave the hand largely free for other tasks. Limitations involve added weight and bulk, potential occlusion of natural finger surfaces, durability and hygiene concerns, calibration needs, and limited exposure to harsh environments.
