Fingernegler

Fingernegler, the Norwegian term for fingernails, are the hard, keratinized plates that cover the fingertips. They sit on the nail bed and grow from the nail matrix, which produces the nail plate. The visible nail consists of the nail plate, nail bed, and surrounding structures such as the cuticle (eponychium) and the hyponychium. The lunula is the pale crescent at the base of the nail.

Growth and development: Fingernails grow from the matrix beneath the proximal nail fold. Growth rates vary by person and finger; typical fingernails advance about 2–4 millimetres per month, commonly around 3 mm. Toenails grow more slowly. Growth tends to slow with age and can be influenced by health, nutrition, and season.

Function: Nails protect the fingertip tissue and provide counter-support for gripping small objects. They aid in tasks requiring precision and tactile feedback, and their appearance can reflect overall health.

Care and maintenance: Regular trimming and filing help prevent splits and jagged edges. Keep nails clean and dry to reduce infection risk; moisturize cuticles and avoid biting or picking at nails. Use gentle nail products and protective gloves when exposing nails to harsh chemicals. Seek medical advice for persistent pain, discoloration, unusual thickening, or rapid changes in nail appearance.

Common conditions and indicators: Fingernails can be affected by fungal infections (onychomycosis), paronychia, brittle nails, ridges or pitting, and changes in color or shape. In some cases, nail changes may indicate underlying health issues such as iron deficiency, thyroid disorders, or psoriasis, and should be evaluated by a clinician if persistent.
