Filtrationstests

Filtrationstests are experimental assessments used to evaluate the performance of filter media and filtration systems. They are conducted in sectors such as water treatment, air purification, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverage processing to determine how effectively a filter removes particles, how it handles fluid flow, and how it behaves under repeated use.

Key performance indicators include particle retention efficiency for a defined challenge, differential pressure (or pressure drop) across the filter at a given flow rate, and the filter’s mechanical integrity and cleanability. Tests may also assess chemical compatibility, fouling tendency, and breakthrough characteristics for adsorptive media.

Common testing approaches include permeability or flux measurements to determine permeance, bubble point and diffusion tests for membrane integrity, and challenge experiments with standardized microspheres or aerosols to quantify retention. For sterilizing-grade filters, log reduction value (LRV) is a common metric. Filtration cycles, backwashing, and fouling simulations are used to evaluate long-term performance.

Standards bodies such as ISO, ASTM, and EN publish methods that specify test conditions, particle sizes, and interpretation criteria to enable comparability and validation across suppliers and plants. Data interpretation emphasizes repeatability, controls, and traceability; results support filter selection, qualification of production processes, and ongoing process monitoring.

Safety and environmental considerations include handling used filters, waste disposal, and equipment maintenance.
