This process is a common response to chronic injury or inflammation. In healthy states, this repair process is tightly regulated and leads to functional tissue regeneration. However, in chronic conditions, this repair mechanism becomes dysregulated, leading to excessive deposition of scar tissue, known as fibrosis.

Fibrosis can occur in various organs, including the liver (hepatic fibrosis), lungs (pulmonary fibrosis), kidneys (renal fibrosis), and heart (cardiac fibrosis). The presence and severity of fibrosis are often indicative of the extent of organ damage and can predict the progression of disease and the risk of organ failure.
