Fiberutvikling is a multidisciplinary field centered on designing, producing, and improving fibers and fiber-based materials. It encompasses a range of fiber types, including textile fibers, polymer fibers, natural fibers, and engineered micro- and nano-fibers, and it integrates chemistry, physics, materials science, and engineering.

The production of fibers relies on various formation methods such as melt spinning for thermoplastics, dry and wet spinning for polymers like polyamides and rayon, and electrospinning for ultrafine fibers. Post-processing steps such as drawing or orientation, sizing, coating, and surface modification tailor mechanical properties, adhesion, moisture management, and chemical resistance.

Key properties include tensile strength, stiffness, elongation, thermal stability, and moisture transport, as well as optical properties for fibers used in communications. Characterization relies on tensile testing, thermal analysis, spectroscopic and microscopy techniques, and surface characterisation.

Applications span textiles and apparel, technical textiles (filters, geotextiles, reinforcement for composites), medical fibers (sutures, tissue engineering scaffolds), and optical fibers for data transmission and sensors.
