In batch fermentation, all ingredients are added at the beginning, and the process runs until completion. Fed-batch involves adding nutrients or a portion of the substrate during the fermentation. Continuous fermentation involves a constant inflow of fresh medium and outflow of spent medium and product, maintaining a steady state. The choice of fermenter type and operating mode depends on the specific application and the organism being cultured.
