Fenotüübilises, also known as phenotypical plasticity, refers to the ability of an organism to alter its physical or physiological traits in response to environmental conditions without undergoing genetic changes. This phenomenon allows organisms to adapt to varying circumstances, enhancing their survival and reproductive success. Unlike genetic mutations, which are permanent and heritable, phenotypic plasticity is often reversible and can occur within an individual’s lifetime.

The concept of phenotypic plasticity is widely observed across different species, from plants to animals. For example, some plants may develop longer stems when exposed to low light conditions, a process known as etiolation, or produce thorns in response to herbivory. Similarly, certain insects may exhibit different body shapes depending on temperature fluctuations during development. These adjustments are typically triggered by environmental cues such as light, temperature, nutrition, or physical stress.

Phenotypic plasticity plays a crucial role in evolutionary biology, as it can influence natural selection by determining which traits are advantageous in specific environments. While genetic variation provides the raw material for evolution, plasticity allows organisms to exploit existing traits more effectively.
