Fenolihartsilla

Fenolihartsilla, commonly referred to as phenolic resin, is a class of synthetic polymers produced by the condensation of phenol with formaldehyde. These resins are typically thermosetting, meaning that once cured they form crosslinked networks that are resistant to heat, chemicals, and creep. The term encompasses several closely related resins developed in the early 20th century, including the well-known Bakelite.

The two main families of phenolic resins are novolacs and resols. Novolacs are formed with phenol and formaldehyde in a ratio that yields linear chains; they require a curing agent or additional aldehyde to crosslink into a thermoset network. Resols are prepared with excess formaldehyde and can cure with heat or basic or acidic catalysts, often without added crosslinkers. The resulting networks exhibit high glass-transition temperatures and excellent dimensional stability, but can be brittle.

Manufacture involves acid- or base-catalyzed condensation polymerization of phenol with formaldehyde, producing water as a byproduct. The resins are typically formulated with fillers, pigments, and reinforcing agents, and cured through heat or pressure. The processing characteristics depend on the specific resin type and curing system, as well as additives used to adjust viscosity and performance.

Applications are diverse and historically significant. Phenolic resins are used in electrical insulation components, moulded thermoset parts, and high-pressure decorative laminates such as countertops and panels. They also serve as binders in foundry sands, as coating materials, and in various molded products requiring heat resistance and structural integrity.

Safety and environmental aspects focus on residual formaldehyde emissions and handling hazards associated with phenol and formaldehyde during production and processing. Modern manufacturing emphasizes emissions control and the use of safer formulations and curing protocols.
