Felvenhet refers to a traditional Hungarian folk custom observed primarily during the Christmas season, particularly on Christmas Eve (Szántásnap). The term originates from the Hungarian words *felvenni*, meaning "to pick up" or "to take," and *het*, meaning "week," though its exact etymology is debated. The practice is deeply rooted in pre-Christian agricultural and pagan traditions, later integrated into Christian celebrations.

Felvenhet involves the collection of branches, typically from fruit trees such as apple, pear, or plum, as well as evergreens like pine or fir. These branches are brought indoors and arranged in homes, often as part of a festive wreath or decorative arrangement. The custom symbolizes the hope for a fruitful new year, as well as protection against evil spirits. In some regions, the branches were believed to ward off misfortune and bring prosperity to livestock and crops.

The tradition varies slightly across different Hungarian regions. In some areas, families would visit orchards or forests to gather branches, sometimes performing simple rituals, such as tying ribbons or leaving offerings. Others would collect branches from their own property, ensuring the trees were not overharvested. The decorations were typically removed after the Twelve Days of Christmas (the period from December 25 to January 6) to symbolize the return of nature to its seasonal cycle.

Felvenhet reflects the blend of Hungarian cultural heritage with Christian influences, emphasizing themes of renewal, protection, and community. While its observance has diminished in modern times due to urbanization and changing traditions, it remains a nostalgic part of Hungarian festive customs, occasionally revived in rural areas or during cultural festivals.
