Felmontering

Felmontering refers to an incorrect mounting or assembly of components in mechanical, electrical, optical, or other systems. The term is used in Norwegian and related languages to describe installation errors that deviate from design specifications, drawings, or manuals. Felmontering can involve incorrect placement, orientation, component selection, fastening, or torque, as well as wrong polarity, connectors, or seals.

Causes include misinterpretation of instructions, poor labeling, missing parts, late-stage design or specification changes not communicated, time pressure, and inadequate fixturing. It can occur at any stage of production, maintenance, or repair, and is more likely in complex or safety-critical assemblies.

Consequences range from functional malfunctions to safety hazards, regulatory non-compliance, warranty claims, and costly rework. In safety-critical industries, felmontering can lead to injury or equipment failure, and may attract liability or compliance risks.

Detection and correction involve visual inspection, functional testing, dimensional checks, and, where appropriate, non-destructive examination. Root-cause analysis may be used to identify underlying issues. Rework typically requires disassembly and correct reassembly, replacement of damaged parts, and updated documentation.

Prevention emphasizes robust procedures and training. Measures include clear assembly instructions, standardized work, jigs and fixtures, color-coding and labeling, part verification, torque-limiting tools, and properly designed connectors. Effective change-control processes and ongoing quality management help reduce felmontering; frameworks such as ISO 9001 promote systematic handling of nonconformities and corrective actions.
