Feinzeichnung

Feinzeichnung is a German term (literally "fine drawing") used in technical, architectural and design contexts to denote a detailed, final drawing prepared for production, construction or formal documentation. It follows preliminary sketches and concept drawings and provides precise geometry, dimensions, tolerances, material specifications and assembly information required for manufacturing or building.

A Feinzeichnung typically includes standardized line types, dimensioning, scale, surface-finish symbols and notes about treatments or finishes. In mechanical engineering it may show part views, section details and machining tolerances; in architecture it conveys construction details, materials and fittings; in product design it documents assemblies, exploded views and bill-of-materials entries. The primary purpose is to create an unambiguous, reproducible specification that suppliers, fabricators and contractors can rely on.

Historically produced by hand using drafting tools and ink, Feinzeichnungen are now commonly created and managed with computer-aided design (CAD) systems, which facilitate revisions, version control and digital exchange in standard formats. Relevant standards and conventions (national and international, such as DIN or ISO) guide symbol use, dimensioning rules and tolerancing to ensure interoperability.

Feinzeichnungen serve practical, legal and archival roles: they form the basis for cost estimation, quality control, compliance checks and warranty documentation. Their level of detail distinguishes them from conceptual or schematic drawings and makes them integral to the transition from design intent to realized product or structure.
