Feilmodus
Feilmodus is a Norwegian term used primarily in reliability engineering and safety analysis to denote a specific failure mode, i.e., a discrete way in which a system can fail or operate incorrectly. The term is used in methods such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and fault-tree analysis to categorize and analyze how components or systems can depart from their intended function. By identifying feilmodus, engineers assess potential consequences, underlying causes, existing controls, and detection methods, enabling prioritization of mitigation actions.
Typical use: In a mechanical system, a feilmodus might be "bearing wear leading to excessive play" or
Etymology: from feil (fault) and modus (mode); cognate with German Fehlmodus. It is mainly used in Norwegian-language
Limitations: The term describes the mode, not the probability of occurrence; risk assessment combines likelihood and
