Fathers are male parents of a child, and the term can refer to biological fathers, adoptive fathers, stepfathers, or other male guardians who fulfill a paternal role. Fathers may be defined by genetics, legal status, or social responsibility, and their role can vary across cultures and individual families.

Historically, fathers were often associated with provisioning and protection, while mothers were the primary caregivers. In many contemporary societies, paternal roles are diverse: some fathers emphasize caregiving and emotional support, while others balance work and family responsibilities.
