Fasikkelin

Fasikkelin, also known as the Icelandic horse gait, is a unique and smooth four-beat lateral ambling gait exhibited by the Icelandic horse breed. This gait is one of the five gaits that the Icelandic horse is known for, the others being walk, trot, canter, and gallop. The term "fasikkelin" is derived from the Icelandic word "fas," which means "to glide" or "to slide," reflecting the smooth and effortless nature of this gait.

The fasikkelin is a lateral gait, meaning that the legs on the same side of the body move in unison, similar to the walk and pace. However, unlike the walk, the fasikkelin is a faster gait, typically ranging from 10 to 20 kilometers per hour. It is also smoother and more comfortable for the rider than the trot or canter, making it a popular choice for long-distance riding and endurance competitions.

The fasikkelin is characterized by a distinct head nod and a slight lateral movement of the hips, which contributes to its smoothness. The gait is achieved through a specific pattern of footfalls, where the legs move in the following sequence: left hind, left front, right hind, right front. This pattern creates a four-beat rhythm that is both efficient and comfortable for the horse and rider.

The Icelandic horse is the only breed known to perform the fasikkelin naturally, although other breeds can be trained to mimic the gait.
