Fasermasse

Fasermasse is a term used in textile engineering and materials science to describe the linear mass density of a fiber—the mass per unit length of the fiber. It is a fundamental parameter for characterizing fibers and is essential in the design of yarns, fabrics, and composite materials.

The mass per length is typically expressed in units such as milligrams per meter (mg/m). In textile practice, two common units are tex, which denotes grams per 1000 meters, and denier, which denotes grams per 9000 meters. These units allow designers to compare fibers and to calculate the mass contribution of fibers in yarns and fabrics.

For a homogeneous, cylindrical fiber with diameter d and material density ρ, the linear density λ can be approximated by λ ≈ ρ × A = ρ × πd^2/4. This relationship links Fasermasse to the fiber’s material properties and its geometry. In practice, actual fibers may deviate from the ideal cylinder, so measurements or precise diameter data are often used for accurate calculation.

Measurement methods include direct gravimetric determination using a high-precision balance over a known length, or indirect approaches that calculate λ from measured diameter and known material density. Modern instruments may also derive Fasermasse from optical measurements combined with material data.

Applications and relevance: Fasermasse influences handling, spinnability, strength, elasticity, drape, and coloration behavior of fibers. It affects yarn construction, textile performance, sewing and weaving processes, and the design of nonwoven materials and fiber-reinforced composites. Accurate specification of Fasermasse is important for quality control and product performance.
