Understanding nautical terms begins with basic anatomy. The bow is the front of the ship, and the stern is the rear. Starboard refers to the right side of the vessel when facing forward, while port is the left side. Above the deck, the superstructure houses cabins and operational areas. Below the main deck are various compartments, including the hull, which forms the watertight body of the ship.
