Faktorilataukset, often translated as factor loadings, are a fundamental concept in factor analysis and related statistical techniques like principal component analysis. They represent the strength of the relationship between observed variables and underlying latent factors. In essence, a factor loading indicates how much variance in a particular observed variable is explained by a specific factor.

These loadings are typically represented as correlation coefficients, ranging from -1 to +1. A positive loading suggests that as the factor increases, the observed variable also tends to increase. Conversely, a negative loading indicates that as the factor increases, the observed variable tends to decrease. The magnitude of the loading is crucial; larger absolute values (closer to 1 or -1) signify a stronger association between the variable and the factor. Loadings close to zero suggest a weak or negligible relationship.

Factor loadings are instrumental in interpreting the meaning of the latent factors. By examining which observed variables load highly onto a particular factor, researchers can infer the conceptual nature of that factor. For example, if several math-related test items have high positive loadings on a factor, that factor might be interpreted as "mathematical ability." Conversely, if a variable has high loadings on multiple factors, it suggests that the variable is influenced by several underlying constructs.

The process of calculating factor loadings involves performing a factor analysis, which typically requires a correlation matrix of the observed variables. Different extraction methods, such as principal component analysis or maximum likelihood, can be used to derive the initial factor loadings. Rotation techniques are often applied to the factor solution to improve interpretability by simplifying the loading patterns.
