Fachmaturität

Fachmaturität, sometimes called Fachmatura, is a Swiss specialized maturity certificate awarded to graduates who complete a vocational education path with additional upper secondary studies. It is designed to bridge vocational training and higher education by combining practical training with targeted theoretical coursework in a chosen field.

The typical route involves completing an apprenticeship or other vocational program and then attending a Berufsmaturitätsschule or Fachmittelschule for additional study. The curriculum focuses on a field such as business, technology, health, social work, or hospitality, alongside general subjects and a practical component that may include project work, examinations, or internships. The certificate that results from this track enables access to bachelor’s programs at universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen). In some cantons, it also grants entry to certain university programs or requires passing an admission test.

Differences from the general university entrance qualification are significant. The Allgemeine Matura (general maturität) provides direct admission to universities, while the Fachmaturität is tailored to vocational backgrounds and the needs of applied higher education. Cantonal rules and requirements vary, and recognition is coordinated by the Swiss Conference of Cantonal Ministers of Education (EDK/EDK).
