Faceswitches are a type of deepfake technology that involves altering a video or image to replace one person's face with another's. This is achieved through sophisticated artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, particularly generative adversarial networks (GANs). GANs are composed of two neural networks, a generator and a discriminator, which work in tandem to create increasingly realistic synthetic media. The generator attempts to create fake images or videos, while the discriminator tries to distinguish between real and fake content. Through this adversarial process, the generator becomes highly proficient at producing convincing fakes.

The creation of a faceswitch typically requires a significant amount of data, including multiple images or video clips of both the source and target individuals. This data is used to train the AI model, allowing it to learn the distinctive features, expressions, and nuances of each face. Once trained, the model can then map the target face onto the source video, often with remarkable accuracy in terms of lip synchronization and head movements.
