FSHhormonien, commonly known as Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), is a gonadotropin produced by the anterior pituitary gland in both men and women. Its primary role is to regulate the reproductive processes in the body. In females, FSH stimulates the growth and development of ovarian follicles, which are small sacs in the ovary containing immature eggs. As follicles mature, they also begin to produce estrogen. FSH levels typically rise at the beginning of the menstrual cycle, initiating follicle development, and then decline as estrogen levels increase. This hormone is crucial for ovulation and fertility.

In males, FSH acts on the Sertoli cells in the testes. It is essential for spermatogenesis, the process of sperm production. FSH, along with testosterone, stimulates the Sertoli cells to support and nourish developing sperm cells. It plays a significant role in regulating sperm count and maturation. Levels of FSH in both sexes are monitored as part of fertility assessments and can indicate various hormonal imbalances or reproductive issues. The production of FSH is controlled by the hypothalamus through gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).
