FSC is an independent, nonprofit organization that promotes responsible forest management worldwide. Its certification system covers environmental stewardship, respect for workers’ rights, and community relations. Paper products can bear FSC labels when the chain of custody confirms that wood from certified forests is present in the product; common labels include FSC 100%, FSC Mix, and FSC Recycled.

PEFC is an international umbrella organization that endorses national forest certification schemes. Like FSC, PEFC certifies both forest management and chain of custody for products. PEFC labels appear on products that meet its chain-of-custody requirements, with variants such as PEFC Certified and PEFC Recycled.

Dual certification exists where a supplier maintains both FSC and PEFC chain-of-custody certificates, allowing products to be certified under both schemes. In practice, this may enable broader market access and cross-claiming, but labeling rules vary by country and packaging may display one or both logos as permitted. Not all products are dual-certified; many carry only one certificate.

FSCPEFCpapier signals an emphasis on sustainable sourcing and supply-chain transparency. It is not a guarantee of overall sustainability, but a credible indicator that the wood components come from certified forests and have been tracked through production. Consumers and buyers can verify certificates through the issuing bodies or product labels.
