FM system, short for frequency modulation system, refers to a wireless audio distribution technology that transmits sound from a microphone or other audio source to a receiver worn by the listener. It is commonly used as an assistive listening device in educational settings to improve speech intelligibility, and is also employed in theaters, houses of worship, and conference rooms.

A typical FM system includes a transmitter and a receiver. The speaker wears or holds a portable microphone transmitter, which converts sound into an FM signal. The receiving unit, which may be a dedicated receiver or a hearing aid with a telecoil or neckloop, picks up the signal and delivers the sound to the listener. Modern variants may use digital signaling, or operate in newer wireless bands such as 2.4 GHz, Bluetooth, or other digital protocols.

In classrooms and similar environments, FM systems work by delivering the speaker’s voice directly to the listener, helping to overcome background noise, reverberation, and distance from the sound source. Advantages include a better signal-to-noise ratio, improved intelligibility, and greater flexibility in placement and movement. Limitations can include potential interference from other FM devices, the need to coordinate transmitter and receiver channels, and range constraints depending on the environment.

Variants of FM systems include personal systems for one-to-one use, group or classroom configurations, and integrated solutions where receivers are built into hearing aids or cochlear implants. They often interface with other assistive technologies, such as soundfield systems or streaming devices, and continue to evolve with advancements in digital wireless technology.
