F82

F82 is the internal chassis designation used by BMW for the two-door coupe version of the BMW 4 Series, specifically the high-performance M4 model. Introduced in 2014 as part of the F80/F82/F83 generation, the F82 M4 was produced through 2020 and formed the performance pillar of the 4 Series lineup before the G82 generation took over.

Power and propulsion are central to the F82’s identity. It uses BMW’s turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine (the S55) shared with the related M3, delivering about 431 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque in early forms. A later M4 Competition upgrade increased output to around 450 horsepower, enhancing acceleration and top-end performance. Transmission options included a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, with rear-wheel drive as standard and high-performance characteristics emphasized through optimized suspension, braking, and differential tuning.

In terms of design and handling, the F82 emphasizes a sporty, road-focused chassis with agile steering, a wide stance, and refined stability control to balance power with controllability. The model is noted for its strong straight-line performance combined with capable cornering dynamics, making it a benchmark for the segment during its production years. The F82 shared its basic architecture with the M3 of the same generation, reflecting BMW’s approach of pairing a practical sports coupe silhouette with a high-performance drive train.

The F82 was succeeded by the G82-generation M4 in 2021, continuing BMW’s lineage of high-performance two-door coupes within the 4 Series framework.
