EØSkommisjonens

EØSkommisjonens, officially known as the EØS-kommisionen, is the Norwegian body responsible for representing the interests of the European Economic Area (EØS) within the country. Established in 1992 following the signing of the EØS Agreement, the commission serves as a liaison between the Norwegian government, the European Union, and the EØS member states.

The primary role of the commission is to monitor and assess the implementation of EØS regulations in Norway. It evaluates whether national legislation complies with EØS obligations, conducts inquiries into policy areas covered by the agreement, and provides recommendations to the Norwegian parliament and cabinet. The commission also facilitates dialogue between Norwegian authorities and EU institutions, ensuring that Norway’s position on EØS matters is clearly articulated.

EØSkommisjonens operates under the umbrella of the Ministry of Finance and is staffed by officials with expertise in areas such as trade, fisheries, and environmental policy. Its reports and findings are publicly available, contributing to transparency and democratic accountability.

Although Norway is not an EU member, the commission's work is crucial because it helps Norway maintain alignment with EU law in the areas covered by EØS, thereby fostering economic cooperation, trade, and compliance with European standards.
