Extremvärdestheori, also known as extreme value theory (EVT), is a branch of statistics that deals with extreme deviations from the median of a probability distribution. It provides a statistical framework for analyzing and modeling rare events, such as record-breaking floods, stock market crashes, or extreme weather conditions.

The core idea of EVT is to understand the behavior of the tail of a probability distribution. Standard statistical methods often focus on the central tendency of data, but EVT specifically investigates the probabilities of events that are far from the average. This is particularly useful in fields where understanding and mitigating the impact of extreme events is crucial.

Key concepts in EVT include the identification of the limiting distributions for extreme values. Two main approaches exist: the Block Maxima method, which analyzes the maximum value within a fixed block of time or data, and the Peaks Over Threshold (POT) method, which focuses on values that exceed a certain high threshold. The generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution is a fundamental result, describing the asymptotic behavior of block maxima. For the POT method, the generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) plays a similar role.

Applications of extremvärdestheori are widespread. In finance, it's used for risk management and to model the probability of large losses. In environmental science, it helps predict the likelihood of extreme weather events like heatwaves or heavy rainfall. Engineering relies on EVT for designing structures that can withstand extreme loads, and in insurance, it's used to assess the probability of very large claims. The theory is essential for making informed decisions when facing potentially catastrophic events.
