Extremitätenverletzungen, also known as limb injuries, encompass a wide range of medical conditions affecting the arms and legs. These can include fractures, dislocations, sprains, strains, contusions, and open wounds. Fractures occur when a bone breaks, while dislocations involve the displacement of bones at a joint. Sprains and strains are injuries to ligaments and muscles, respectively, often caused by overstretching or tearing. Contusions are bruises resulting from blunt force trauma. Open wounds, or lacerations, involve breaks in the skin.

The causes of extremitätenverletzungen are diverse and often related to physical activity, accidents, or falls. Sports injuries are a common cause, particularly in high-impact activities. Vehicle accidents and workplace incidents also frequently lead to severe limb trauma. The severity of these injuries can vary greatly, from minor bruises to life-threatening conditions requiring immediate medical intervention.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, assessment of medical history, and often imaging techniques such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs to visualize bone and soft tissue damage. Treatment depends on the type and severity of the injury. Fractures may require immobilization with casts or splints, or surgical intervention with plates, screws, or rods. Dislocations are usually reduced, meaning the bones are put back into their proper alignment. Sprains and strains are often managed with RICE therapy: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. More severe injuries may necessitate physical therapy for rehabilitation and recovery of function. Complications can include infection, nerve damage, or long-term mobility issues if not treated appropriately.
