The term combines experience with acknowledgement to emphasize that the focus is on the other person's lived reality rather than on one's own interpretations. In dialogue, it is enacted through active listening, reflective paraphrase, and emotion-focused responses that name feelings and experiences. Techniques include listening without interruption, asking open-ended questions, summarizing what has been conveyed, and validating the legitimacy of the other person's experience, even when one personally disagrees.
