In practice, it is sometimes used informally to describe a person who holds the title of chief executive officer and who is actively involved in day-to-day management, strategy execution, and operational leadership. The phrase may appear in job postings, company profiles, or governance documents to emphasize the executive nature of the role, as opposed to a more ceremonial or non-executive position.

Usage and context vary. In startups and private companies, "Executive CEO" can distinguish the role from a non-executive chairman or a purely strategic figure. Some firms pair the title with other responsibilities, such as President or Chief Operating Officer, creating a dual-role leadership. In other contexts the term is used redundantly since the CEO already denotes an executive position.

Responsibilities typically aligned with an executiveCEO mirror those of a standard CEO: setting strategy, leading the management team, allocating resources, monitoring performance, communicating with the board and investors, and representing the company externally. The exact scope depends on the corporate structure, ownership, and governance documents.

Governance and accountability considerations apply as well. An executive CEO is usually a member of the board and reports to the board; the separation of chair and CEO roles is a common governance approach to ensure oversight. The label "executive" does not replace fiduciary duties or alter accountability; it mainly signals an emphasis on day-to-day operations.
