Excluding

Excluding is the act of preventing someone or something from being included or participating in a group, list, or consideration. It can refer to deliberate selection or rule-based removal, as when a member is excluded from a team, a participant from a study, or items from an inventory.

In mathematics, exclusion commonly refers to set difference: the operation A minus B (A \ B), the elements that are in A but not in B. This is sometimes described as excluding B from A. The concept is fundamental to counting, probability, and database queries.

In research and medicine, exclusion criteria specify conditions that disqualify potential participants; exclusions help ensure safety and validity. Data or results may be excluded due to errors, outliers, or protocol deviations.
