The evidence‑based movement originated in the early 1990s, most prominently in the field of healthcare. James G.M. Slatkin and others called for a systematic review of research as the foundation for clinical practice, and the phrase “practice based on evidence” gained broader use. By the late 1990s, the term had spread to encompass any domain where objective data could inform practice.

In medicine, the evidence‑based approach is operationalized through systematic reviews, meta‑analyses, randomized controlled trials, and clinical guidelines. Doctors are encouraged to consult graded recommendations—often summarized by the GRADE system—to assess the strength of evidence.
